IDF Congress 2019

Introduction: In 2019, the global prevalence of diabetes was estimated at 9.3%, affecting approximately 463 million people. This figure is projected to rise to 10.2% (about 578 million) by 2030 and 10.9% (around 700 million) by 2045. Diabetes is more common in urban areas (10.8%) than in rural areas (7.2%), and it is also more prevalent in high-income countries (10.4%) compared to low-income countries (4.0%). Alarmingly, nearly half of the individuals living with diabetes, 50.1%, are not aware that they have the condition. In addition, the global prevalence of impaired glucose tolerance was estimated to be 7.5% (approximately 374 million) in 2019, with projections indicating a rise to 8.0% (about 454 million) by 2030 and 8.6% (around 548 million) by 2045
